This page contains links to allow you to download a number of Streaming Video clips, concerning some of the issues surrounding waste management and incineration. Some of the clips may take a little while to download, but are worth the wait. Unfortunately, space constraints mean that we are currently, only able to supply high-speed versions of these clips.  

Available Clip Categories

All clips are available to download and play using RealPlayer. The clips are loosely broken into Six main sections:-

• The occupation of the burner by Greenpeace / GAIA activists on the 17th June, 2002. The Chineham action was one of several co-ordinated actions against municipal waste incineration around the world, by members of the Global Anti-Incineration (GAIA) network.
  .
• The official opening of the burner by HRH Princess Anne on the 26th September, 2003. Headline news stories from both the BBC and Meridian are included, broken into 5 segments for easy download.
  .
  This section also includes video footage of Councillor Keith Estlin (Hampshire County Councillor for the Environment!) making the ridiculous claim:
  .
  "There are absolutely no health problems at all with the incinerator. The facility emits fewer pollutants in a year than a normal bonfire does in eight hours."
  .
  In response to this ludicrous statement, the BBAC would like to suggest that Councillor Estlin speak to noted waste consultant Alan Watson who had this to say about his comments:-
  .
  "The Chineham plant is authorised to emit 102 tpa of [Nitrogen Dioxides] NOx, 50 tpa of [Sulphur Dioxides] SO2 and greater than 5 tpa of Particulates - you must have truly awesome bonfires in Hampshire!"
  .
  Alan also drew our attention to a recent white paper* on Dioxins produced during bonfire night, which makes the following observation among others:
  .
  "It is not surprising that dioxins are generated on bonfire night - it provides an annual al fresco toxic waste disposal fest with tyres, paints, PCP coated wood, PVC coated materials, solvents and mixed household waste being burned along with the clean wood and probably a few thousand hedgehogs. The generation of dioxins provides a powerful argument for better control of the main precursor materials."
  .

• Recycling tips from the BBC "First Sight" documentary. A typical working mum looks at how she can reduce her families waste in simple and practical ways. The deeper underlying issue of municipal waste management is also explored.  
  .
• The BBC Newsnight investigation into the incinerator industry and it's questionable relationship with county councils, following the Byker scandal in which highly toxic ash was spread over pathways through allotments in Byker, Newcastle in July, 2001.  Much of the allotment land has been contaminated and has subsequently been declared unsuitable for the growth/production of food. Despite this appalling action by Newcastle council, the Environment Agency again refused to react and the head of the EA Baroness Young has since been heavily criticised for the EA's handling of this scandal.
  .
• A collection of regional video clips, mostly relating to the Chineham burner. They include an interview with chairman of the BBAC and local parish councillor Chris Tomblin, recorded for BBC "South Today". There is also an interview with the BBAC's Geoff Webb, an expert in the field of childhood cancers who has extensively researched the co-relation between incidents of childhood cancer and asthma with proximity to industrial developments including incinerators and interviews with Borough Councillor Martin Biermann and local activist Ed Leceyw.
  .
• Lastly, there is a video of Ex-Councillor ofDudley Keep,  (who "quite co-incidentally" is now a non-executive board member of Hampshire Waste Services), showing his true colours at an early site visit. 
  .
  As Dudley Keep:-
  .
  * Was the chairman of the Hampshire County Council Planning and Transportation Committee, the quango that that rubber-stamped the planning application.
  .
  * Was the councillor most responsible for handing over the county's public consultation responsibilities and obligations, to Hampshire Waste Services.  To add insult to injury, the public consultation was even handed to HWS before planning permission was granted, clearly demonstrating that although the application had not been approved, it was merely a formality and that public opinion would be entirely disregarded, beyond the minimum effort necessary, to keep up the mere appearance ofresponsibility. 
  .
  * Was a representative of the Basingstoke-East electorate, who owned property in Old Basing but who actually resided in Winchester at the time.  Co-incidentally, Dudley Keep has since sold his house in Old Basing and moved out of the area.
  .
  * Was the councillor who reluctantly received a petition of over 2500 signatures opposing the development...and then showed his contempt for the petition by tossing it onto the ground.
  .
  * Was one of the many committee members who refused to attend a presentation given to the Basingstoke and Deane Borough council, which resulted in the B&DBC voting overwhelmingly against the development.  This was of course immediately over-ridden by the County Council.
  .
  * Actually appeared to doze off/fall asleep during the County Council PlanningApplication Approval meeting.
  .
  ...we felt he deserved a section in his own right!  Here is just a small sample of the arrogance of Dudley Keep.  We sincerely hope that Mr Keep was paid more than thirty pieces of silver for his part in our fate.

Recycling

One of the most important things that we can ALL do to reduce the need for both landfill and incineration, is to get serious about recycling as much of our household waste as possible. This section includes edited highlights of the recent BBC "First Sight" documentary on recycling and contains a number of useful ideas, hints and tips.

National Television Clips

An episode of the BBC "Newsnight" (Tuesday 3rd July, 2001, 10:30pm on BBC2) has highlighted the incinerator industry's failure to self-regulate and most importantly, its apparent reluctance to tighten it's safety controls to prevent another scandal such as the one that occurred at the Byker Incinerator in Newcastle.  The programme also questioned the way that the Environment Agency is currently failing to take action and includes an interview with environment minister Michael Meacher.

It is not possible to produce a single RealPlayer video stream of the entire program, due to the overall length of the production.  We have therefore split the entire programme into a number of smaller parts, which will allow visitors to download

NOTE: Due to slightly poor sound quality on the original recording, we have been forced to convert the file to a higher-quality RealPlayer video stream than usual, to preserve the integrity of the sound. This does however, significantly increase the size of the files, which range from 2.5MB to 8MB in size.

The councillor whose arrogance knew no bounds

Basingstoke East county councillor Dudley Keep (The then-chairman of the planning and transportation committee - the quango that rubber-stamped the burner planning application) showed his true colours on a recent visit to the Chineham incinerator site, when asked an awkward question, by Councillor Martin Biermann. Councillor Keep has repeatedly shown utter contempt for his constituents, the democratic process, and even his fellow councillors!

In subsequent county elections, we are pleased to report that councillor Keep was not re-elected, which we view as a victory for reason over arrogance.  The legacy he has left will unfortunately, take longer to put right.
